Fourth of July Celebrations
 | | The skies over Hutchinson County were lit up Friday night as area residents celebrated America's Birthday. Fireworks were the main attraction of the evening at many gatherings, but hotdogs, hamburgers, ribs, steaks and homemade ice cream also made the list of things enjoyed by county residents. (Photo by Nancy Young) | City of Fritch to Host Fireworks Display July 4 Looking for a fun way to celebrate the Fourth of July with your whole family? The City of Fritch will be hosting a free fireworks display the evening of the fourth at the football practice field, just off Eagle Blvd behind Sanford-Fritch Junior High School..
The fireworks will begin around 9 p.m. Those attending are asked to park on the southside of the practice field. According to Ernest Terry, Fritch City Manager, the City spent around $1800 on fireworks for the event. "We have some really great fireworks, he stated and we would like to invite everyone to come out and share in this celebration with us."
The Fritch Chamber of Commerce will be selling hotdogs, chips and soda for $2.50 before the fireworks, beginning at 7 p.m.
At 7:30 p.m., a program to honor our veterans will be conducted. Any local veteran who wishes to participate in this event is invited to attend. If the veteran is active military or deceased, a family member may "stand-in" for the veteran in the program.
The Veteran's program will also be held on the practice field behind SF Junior High School and every is invited to come out and help honor our veterans, enjoy some refreshments and watch the fireworks display.Clarification on Discharge of Fireworks After July 4 Submitted by Garrett Spradling Deputy Fire Marshal Hutchinson County Fire Marshal’s Office
There have been several questions regard the discharge of fireworks after July 4th with the fireworks season ends. To clarify this matter, we have contacted the State Fire Marshal’s Office. The firework season only applies to the sale and purchase of the Fireworks and not to the discharge of fireworks. Residents may discharge fireworks after July 4th as long as they following all other regulations.NPS Rangers to Present Free Programs LAKE MEREDITH – National Park Service Rangers are presenting free programs each Saturday evening through mid-August at the Fritch Fortress amphitheater at Lake Meredith National Recreation Area.
According to a news release from the National Park Service, programs are held each Saturday at 8 p.m. and last approximately one hour. Visitors are encouraged to bring snacks, lawn chairs, and blankets to make this event more enjoyable. The program schedule for the month of July is: July 5 – Snakes Alive! Snakes of the Texas Panhandle July 12 – Silent Invaders! Invasive Plant and Animal Species in the Texas Panhandle July 19 – Staying Alive! Native American Pre-History of the Panhandle Area July 26 – Flintknapping Demonstration! How Native Americans Made Arrowheads All programs are free and no reservations are required.  | | Sweet treats of tasty watermelon awaited the Summer Reading Program participants on the last day of the program for the summer. The Summer Reading Program is sponsored by the Hutchinson County Library and programs are held once per week during the month of June at all three library branches. (Photo by Judy Allen) | The 2008 Summer Reading Program at the Hutchinson County Library branches ended last week with the announcement of the top readers, bookmark contest winners, M & M Count contest winners, the grand prize drawing held at each of the three library branches and on a sweet note as a watermelon feast was held at each branch.
In addition, volunteers served up delicious watermelon at each branch for the kids who participated in the program for this year.
Stinnett’s Summer Reading Program was held each Monday during the month of June. 17 children signed up to participate in the program and 10 children turned in reading logs. 6 of those turned in were second graders and under reading a total of 1, 154 books. 4 of those turned in were third graders and up reading a total of 175 hours.
The top reader in the easy category in Stinnett was Zachary Horne, 7 years old. He read a total of 425 books during the program. Winner in the juvenile category was Catarina Orozco, 13 years old who read 56 hours.
Stinnett bookmark contest winner in the easy category was Tyler Horne, 5 years old who read 200 books. The juvenile category winner was Catarina Orozco, 13 years old, who read for 56 hours.
Aspen Francis, 5 years old was the winner in the M & M count contest. Her guess was 200 M & M candies in the licensed M & M container. 196 was the actual count. [more] |
